Snoring is a dysfunction that is caused in the mechanism of the human body. The muscles in your soft palate, throat and tongue relax when you are in deep sleep, closing the airway partially.Trying to stop snoring can be a hassle and frustrating. Especially when it causes you to get less sleep at night. So, what I’m going to do is share with you some home remedies for snoring. That way, you can sleep better at night without being awaken from your snoring. Some people tend to snore when they breathe through their mouth while sleeping and their tongue is incorrectly positioned within the oral structure, effectively blocking their airway. You may have tried different things only to find that so far nothing has helped. You wake up un-rested, cranky, and irritable and on top of all that, your family may also be cranky and un-rested because your snoring may have kept them all awake also.Another suggestion in home remedies for snoring would be to try and elevate the head of your bed. This simple solution can often help reduce your snoring problem, simply put the two feet of the bed on bricks or another supportive product. This type of solution can also be helpful for people suffering from congestion, cold or allergies during the night. Elevating your bed head will help prevent the nasal airways to become congested during your sleep and thus reduce your snoring. One of the best home remedies for snoring relief is to sleep on your side. There is a possible solution if you fall asleep on your side but then shift to your back while sleeping. There are some special pillows or other contraptions that can keep you on your side. Do some searching online and you will come across these products.Quit smoking. Anything that is going to obstruct breathing can lead to snoring. Many people that smoke also snore at night. Even after you quit smoking, you might still snore due to the effects that smoking has on the body. Obviously, there are more hazardous side effects of smoking besides snoring. Eliminate smoking and the snoring might disappear as well. Smoking isn’t cheap either.Milk. You must be drinking milk before bedtime during your childhood days. If you snore a lot, then you should get back the habit. Drink at least half a cup of milk before going to bed. Avoid alcohol and coffee. If you are lactose intolerant, a cup of eucalyptus tea can be taken as an alternative to milk.Another remedy for stop snoring is by placing two or large size pillows and making your sleeping position in manner that doesn’t obstruct your breathing.Exercise regularly to improve your cardiovascular health, breathing and lung capacity. It also helps to keep your nasal passages firm and in good conditioning. In addition, it keeps your weight under control. People who often exercise tend to snore less. However, never exercise before bedtime as this may keep you awake instead of sleeping.

Technically, snoring is defined as any resonant noise from the respiratory tract that emerges during sleep.
Biologically, snoring refers to a vibration in the airway connecting the nose and the mouth; a vibration that can emerge through the mouth, the nose, or (as some non-snorers are painfully aware), it can emerge through both!
As you can sense, the more narrow the airway, generally speaking, the more intense the vibration; and ultimately, the louder the snore.
You may also be wondering why snoring only seems to emerge at night; after all, people literally use their airway every moment of their life; so why is snoring a nocturnal dilemma?
The answer to this is found in looking at the tissues within the airway. This tissue is very soft, and at night becomes relaxed; it’s similar to how some muscles, like biceps, become relaxed at night since the body does not require them.
As the throat (and its subsequent tissue) relaxes during sleep, the wind tunnel/airway becomes narrower and hence, snoring occurs.
There are several health and lifestyle factors that contribute to snoring; and this is true for both men and women, since snoring is a condition that does affect both genders (though surveys suggest that men snorers outnumber women snorers by a ratio of 2:1).
Some of the major health and lifestyle factors that can contribute to snoring include:
Allergies, which can clog the airway and trachea
Allergy medications, which can dry the nasal cavities
Cold and Flu, which can similarly clog the airway (this is why some people experience snoring only when they’re suffering a cold or flu)
Thickened tissues in the nasal passages, which can sometimes result from some surgeries unrelated to snoring
Overuse of nasal sprays which irritate the nasal passageway
Enlarged adenoids and/or tonsils
Goiter (swelling of the an ineffective thyroid gland in the neck)
A disproportionately large tongue that blocks airflow
Ineffective regulation and neural control of mucus membranes
Obesity and excess weight (leading to an enlarged neck and excess soft tissue in the trachea)*
Excess gut/belly (relatively decreasing the size of the lungs)*
Drinking alcohol**, which:
- sedates the throat muscles and causes them to collapse
- dilates blood vessels which swells up throat tissue
Cigarette smoking, which inflames the upper airway
The normal aging process, which can simply lead to a loss of muscle tone in the neck and thus snoring
* Since relatively more men tend to experience an excess gut, this is one reason why more men tend to experience snoring than women.
** Any medication (prescribed, over the counter, or illicit) that leads to excessive relaxation can lead to snoring.
While snoring affects people of both genders and of all ages, it typically does afflict more men than women. There are a few reasons for this. Overall, men’s necks tend to be larger than women’s necks; and thus there may be more fleshy tissue in there just waiting to combine with air flow and cause snoring.
Another reason is that women produce the hormone called Progesterone, which is considered by some medical experts to be an aid in reducing or preventing snoring. In fact, there are some anti-snoring treatments that involve Progesterone therapy for snoring men.
The actual snoring sound that emerges is dependant upon the force of wind that is being pushed through the (narrowed) airway. As you can envision, the more potent the force of wind (i.e. the faster the speed of the wind), the louder the snoring.
This is also why even babies can snore; but it’s often not considered snoring in the conventional sense, because an infant’s force of wind through their wind tunnel is so mild, that it can easily be ignored (though this can lead to complications; infant snoring can often be a symptom for a breathing and/or respiration problem, including allergy).

Nearly everybody snores. Snoring is a nasal block that occurs while sleeping and is very common. If you are suffering from a common cold or other nasal impediment, then some amount snoring is nearly unavoidable.
However excessive snoring is a medical problem that needs to be examined and treated appropriately. In fact, excessive snoring is a common symptom of sleep apnea in which an individual actually stops breathing for a few seconds, numerous times throughout the night. This can lead to a heart attack or stroke. Needless to say, this situation needs to be remedied right away.
But assuming that a sleep apnea isn’t the problem, what actually causes excessive snoring?
It has been shown that being overweight makes excessive snoring more likely. Cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption also contribute to the occurrence of excessive snoring. And, not surprisingly, asthma and any sort of nasal infection will make any snoring even worse.
If you happen to be near an “excessive snorer” you may notice a sudden loud noise, or more commonly, that the mouth is open and there is a continuous loud noise at a volume that makes it nearly impossible for anyone nearby to sleep.
So, how do you stop snoring excessively?
First, understand that excessive snoring can be treated by a doctor. Your sleep pattern and position has a large impact on how much you snore. If you sleep on your side, snoring can be greatly reduced or even avoided. Excessive snorers generally sleep on their back with their mouth wide open. Your doctor may advise methods of keeping your jaw shut, such as by using a “sleep genie” in order to avoid snoring.
If excessive snoring is still a problem, then surgery may be required.
So, how do you know if your snoring remedy is working? If you share your bed with another person, ask them to help you keep a journal of how often you snore and what your body position was. Keep this journal every night for a period of several weeks to observe any changes.
Once a sleeping aid or course of treatment has been prescribed for you, keep another journal in which you describe the results. Has the snoring gotten better? Worse? Do any sleep positions work better than others? Does a device to keep your jaw shut at night actually help?
If you are taking medication, keep a record of what you take and when. Is it helping the symptoms? Are there any side effects? Keep track of when side effects occur and how severe they are. Having this information handy will help your doctor prescribe the treatment that best addresses your overall health.
Setting up journals like the ones described here is easy to do. You can use a paper worksheet, a computer word processing program, or even a spreadsheet program like Excel.
You owe it to yourself to take an active role in managing your own health. Excessive snoring is nearly unbearable for anyone who is near you when you sleep, and you need to use every tool at your disposal to make sure you resolve this problem.
