New York Plastic Surgery is still a bustling industry even in the economy of today. Both women and men remain intrigued by the possibility and promise of what cosmetic enhancement procedures can do. There may have never been a better time to search for a New York plastic surgery doctor since prices, costs, and financing have become more agressive and appealing due to the state of the economy. Coupons and specials are abundant throughout the New York, since elective cosmetic enhancement procedures are not typically covered by insurance.

If you are looking for a top surgeon in New York, you will want to start by looking for surgeons who have been board certified by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). Through this certification process your surgeon will have had a minimum of six years of surgical experience and training, at least three of which were precisely in the field of plastic surgery. Cosmetic surgery can be performed by a wide variety of physicians, but only board certified doctors can be called a plastic surgeon. As you might expect, board certified New York plastic surgery doctors will command a slightly higher price. However, when you consider the importance and ramifications of the the procedure it is without a question worth the price. Do not be swayed by the low priced ads, especially from other countries where training and medical habits are not nearly as sophisticated and controlled as in the United States. With thorough investigation and a couple of consultations you will be able to find a New York plastic surgery doctor who is right for you.

Many surgeons may specialize in certain types of procedures, perhaps in the area that you are looking for. While one doctor may specialize in breast augmentation and liposuction, others may be specialists in face lift, tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), liposuction, nose reshaping (nosejob, rhinoplasty), butt lift, thigh lift, eyelid lift and more. In a brief search of New York plastic surgeons you will find others who specialize in laser skin resurfacing, chemical peels, facial implants (cheek, chin, or jaw reshaping), lip augmentation and more. Typically those who peform breast augmentation also offer breast lift, breast reduction, breast implant removal, and breast reconstruction.

One of the most effective methods of searching for a top local surgeon is to look at their before and after photos of procedures already performed on previous patients. Many surgeons will offer a wide variety of these photos on their internet websites. While these photos might pique your interest, be sure to understand that photos can somewhat distort the results, especially considering the variety of computer screens and web browsers that can slightly alter the before and after photos.

After you have met with a few doctors and reduce your choices to just one or two, you should ask your doctor for a few patient referrals. Many doctors are willing and able to provide the names and numbers of a couple of other satisfied patients. Call these patients and interview them about how the surgeon treated them throughout the process and what, if any, complications they experienced. Ask if they experienced any negative surprises, if they would go back to the surgeon and would they recommend them to their best friend.

One excellent method of locating a top surgeon is to research through the directories found on the internet. Generally the New York plastic surgeons that are most active in the field will be found in multiple directories on the web. Search not only the internet directory but use the links to the surgeons own websites. On those pages you can learn a great deal about the surgeon themselves.

Rhinoplasty, also called “nose refinement surgery,” is the most complicated cosmetic surgery procedure performed today. The procedure is able to reduce or increase the size of your nose, adjust the shape of the nose’s tip or bridge, make the nostrils smaller and closer together, or adjust the angle between your nose and upper lip. Rhinoplasty may also be able to correct birth defects or injuries, potentially relieving some breathing problems.
The best candidates for Rhinoplasty are people who are looking for improvement in the way they look, are physically healthy, psychologically stable, and have realistic expectations. During the initial consultation, the surgeon will evaluate the structure of your nose and face and discuss the possibilities for enhancement with you. The doctor will also explain some factors that can influence the procedure and results. Some of these factors include your cartilage and nasal bones’ structure, the shape of your face, thickness of your skin, your age, and your expectations regarding the procedure.
Be sure to tell the surgeon if you have had any previous nose surgery or an injury to your nose. You should also inform your surgeon if you have any allergies or breathing difficulties, if you are taking any medications, vitamins, or recreational drugs and if you smoke.
You will be provided specific instructions regarding how to prepare for the surgery, guidelines on eating and drinking, smoking, taking or avoiding certain vitamins/medications, and washing your face. Carefully following these instructions will help your surgery go more smoothly.
Rhinoplasty usually takes an hour or two, though complicated procedures may take longer. During surgery, the skin of the nose is separated from its supporting framework of bone and cartilage, which is then sculpted to the desired shape. The nature of the sculpting will depend on your problem and the Surgeon’s preferred technique. Finally, the skin is redraped over the new framework.
Most physicians place nasal packs or soft plastic splints in your nostrils, a procedure perceived by many patients as unpleasant and uncomfortable. Surgeons use the most advanced surgical techniques, allowing them to avoid packing the nose with gauze in most of the cases. When the surgery is complete, a splint will be applied to help your nose maintain its new shape.
After surgery, especially during the first twenty-four hours, your face will feel puffy, your nose may ache, and you may have a dull headache. You can control any discomfort with the pain medication prescribed by the surgeon. On the first day, you’ll need to stay in bed and keep your head elevated.
You will notice that the swelling and bruising around your eyes will increase at first, reaching a peak after two or three days. The application of cold compresses can reduce the swelling, as well as make you feel a bit better. Most of the swelling and bruising should disappear within two weeks.
Some minor bleeding may occur during the first few days after the surgery. You may continue to feel some stuffiness for several weeks. The surgeon will ask you not to blow your nose for a week or so, while the tissues heal. After 7 to 10 days, all dressings and stitches will be removed.
Most rhinoplasty patients are up and about within two days, and able to return to school or work a week following surgery. The surgeon will give you specific guidelines for gradually resuming your normal activities, but generally you should avoid strenuous activities for two to three weeks. You should also avoid hitting or rubbing your nose, or getting it sunburned. Be gentle when washing your face and hair or using cosmetics.
Day by day, your nose will begin to look better and your spirits will improve. Even though it will take months for the final results to emerge, you will be able to enjoy your new look a week or two after surgery.

One of the real concerns of many patients who are considering rhinoplasty surgery, I have learned, is that their nose will be packed after surgery.the removal of nasal packing is a very uncomfortable thought for most patients and one that they would like to avoid.

The thought of ansal packing removal is unpleasant at best and downright painful at worst. I have found that many potential rhinoplasty patients often ask….are you going to pack my nose? After hearing this concern numeruos times over the years, I have come to appreciate a patient’s apprehensions over the issue of packing in the nose after rhinoplasty surgery.

The good news is that the need for packing a rhinoplasty surgery patient is very infrequent. In cosmetic rhinoplasty, where only the visible part of the nose is being changed, there is very little reason to ever have to pack the nose after surgery as this causes very little internal bleeding. If your nose surgery is to improve your breathing, known as functional nasal airway surgery, nasal packing may have to be used if there is persistent bleeding still at the end of the operation. My experience, however, is that this is not very frequent.

Nasal packing achieves two purposes; 1) to manage bleeding during and after surgery, and 2) to push the lining back into its proper place against the bone or cartilage walls of the internal nose. When straightening the septum, which is often necessary to improve nasal breathing, the lining of the nose must first be lifted up. The lining of the septum must be put back after it is straightened. Packing of the nose has been traditionally used to push this lining back into its original place. The use of packing has been replaced by many surgeons with sewing it back into place through a sewing technique known as quilting. Much to the happiness of patients and plastic surgeons alike, this internal suturing method has replaced the need for nasal packing in most cases. Only in cases where there is too much bleeding at the end of surgery will packing be used to control it, much like the way it is used to stop difficult nose bleeds.

So to those patients considering most forms of rhinoplasty surgery, this is one issue that you need not overly concern yourself with! Modern rhinoplasty techniques have virtually eliminated the need for this uncomfortable consideration. Not only is the concern about pain associated with packing removal eliminated, but the fear of not being able to breathe through your nose at all ( a claustrophobic sensation) right after surgery is also alleviated.
